American Standard Code for Information Interchange is a character encoding standard for electronic communication. ASCII codes represent text in computers and digital devices as 7-bit binary numbers. The first version of ASCII was published in 1963. It is one of the most common encoding formats for text files. The original version of ASCII was based on the English language and provided a 7-bit representation for 128 unique characters.
