IOUs are privately held enterprises acting as public utilities. Examples of public utilities are: telephone lines, energy solutions - electricity and petrochemical. IOUs are owned by shareholders and are operated for profit to the shareholders. Their trade practices and prices are regulated by entities such as Citizens Utility Board (CUB) for fair and affordable rates to end-customers.
