ITBP is a specialized mountain force of India that is deployed as patrolling force on it's Eastern and North-eastern borders with Tibet (China). It is one of the five Central Armed Police Forces of India, and was raised on 24 October 1962, in the wake of the Sino-Indian War of 1962.
The governing body for the force is Ministry of Home Affairs (Government of India).

ITBP is a multi-dimensional force with 5 primary functions:
- Vigil on the northern borders, detection and prevention of border violations, and promotion of the sense of security among the local populace
- Check illegal immigration and trans-border smuggling
- Provide security to sensitive installations and threatened VIPs
- Restore and preserve order in any area in the event of a disturbance
- To maintain peace
The ITBP has recently also taken on a disaster management role and has been crucial in providing support and relief operations for natural disasters such as Earthquakes, floods and COVID-19.
